HOW TO BACKTEST EXPERT ADVISORS PROPERLY

Learn to evaluate EA performance with historical data before relying on it in a live trading account.

What Backtesting Can Tell You

Backtesting simulates how an Expert Advisor would have traded using historical market data. It is useful for checking whether an EA follows its intended rules and for estimating drawdown, trade frequency, and sensitivity to settings.

Prepare Reliable Data

  • Use high-quality historical tick data (99% modeling quality in MT4/MT5)
  • Include realistic variable spreads, commissions, and execution slippage
  • Test multiple market regimes including high-volatility, ranging, and trending phases
  • Step-by-Step Backtest Process

    1. Open the Strategy Tester in MetaTrader (Ctrl+R)

    2. Select the EA, target symbol, and timeframe

    3. Set the date range and initial account deposit

    4. Run the simulation and examine the equity curve

    5. Analyze maximum relative drawdown, profit factor, and recovery factor

    Avoiding Curve Fitting

  • Never optimize parameters solely for the largest historic profit
  • Validate the selected parameters on an out-of-sample date range
  • Forward-test on a demo account before risking real funds
