CHOOSING THE RIGHT BROKER FOR AUTOMATED TRADING

What to look for in a broker when running Expert Advisors, including execution speed, spreads, and regulations.

Why Broker Selection Matters for EAs

Automated trading strategies rely heavily on rapid execution and tight pricing. An EA that performs well on a demo account can struggle on a live broker if spreads are wide or execution latency is high.

1. Execution Speed & Low Latency

  • EAs, especially scalpers and news traders, require execution in under 50 milliseconds
  • Look for brokers offering ECN or STP execution models with direct liquidity access
  • Choose a broker with servers physically close to your trading VPS location (e.g. London LD4 or New York NY4)
  • 2. Spreads and Commissions

  • Raw spread accounts generally offer tighter pricing (from 0.0 pips) with a fixed round-turn commission
  • High spreads erode the profitability of frequent-trading robots
  • Compare average spreads during active trading hours, not just advertised minimums
  • 3. Account Specifications & Leverage

  • Leverage: Adequate leverage allows flexible margin management, but higher leverage multiplies risk
  • Minimum Deposit: Ensure your capital meets the EA's minimum drawdown requirements
  • Hedging Capability: Verify the broker allows opening simultaneous buy and sell orders on the same pair
  • 4. Trading Restrictions

  • Check whether the broker permits scalping (holding trades for under 60 seconds)
  • Confirm there are no restrictions on placing orders close to the current market price (Stop Levels)
  • Ensure the broker allows automated trading (Algo Trading / EAs) on your chosen account type
  • 5. Regulatory Oversight & Fund Safety

    1. Choose brokers regulated by reputable tier-1 authorities (FCA, ASIC, CySEC)

    2. Ensure client funds are held in segregated bank accounts

    3. Verify negative balance protection is supported
