UNDERSTANDING EA SETTINGS & PARAMETERS

Learn what each EA parameter means and how to configure them for optimal performance and safety.

Core EA Parameters Explained

Every Expert Advisor comes with configurable inputs that control its trading strategy, risk exposure, and operational timing. Understanding these settings is essential before running any robot on a live or demo account.

1. Magic Number

  • A unique identifier assigned to trades placed by the EA
  • Allows MT4/MT5 to differentiate between orders from different robots or manual trades
  • Always use a distinct Magic Number for each EA running on the same account
  • 2. Lot Size and Risk Settings

  • Fixed Lot Size: Places every order with an identical volume (e.g. 0.01 or 0.1 lots)
  • Dynamic Risk Percentage (%): Calculates lot size automatically based on your account balance and stop loss distance
  • Multiplier / Martingale: Increases lot size after losing trades; use extreme caution with this setting
  • 3. Stop Loss (SL) & Take Profit (TP)

  • Stop Loss: The price level where losing trades are closed to prevent excessive account damage
  • Take Profit: The target price where profitable trades are closed to lock in gains
  • Can be set in pips, points, or currency amount depending on the EA's design
  • 4. Trailing Stop

  • Automatically moves the Stop Loss in the direction of a profitable trade
  • Protects open profits while allowing winning trades room to run
  • Trailing Step determines how frequently the SL is updated as price advances
  • 5. Maximum Spread & Slippage Filter

  • Max Spread: Prevents the EA from executing orders when market spreads widen abnormally
  • Slippage: The maximum acceptable difference between order price and executed price
  • 6. Trading Time & News Filters

  • Sets specific hours or sessions (London, New York, Tokyo) when the EA is permitted to open trades
  • News filter settings pause trading before and after major macroeconomic data releases
  • Best Practice Configuration

    1. Always start on a demo account to verify how parameter changes affect order behavior

    2. Avoid setting risk higher than 1% to 2% per trade

    3. Never disable the Stop Loss setting on live accounts
